We’ve planned a wonderful program for kids to make the library a great place to read, learn, and discover what’s available for their enjoyment!
SUMMER READING
What it's all about...
There’s also a serious side to summer reading. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents summer reading loss. Studies also indicate students who read for recreation outperformed those who don’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests.
Our library is committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families.
Game Board & Reading Logs available at the Library Starting Monday, June 3, 2024
Who Can Participate?
The Summer Reading Program is for everyone! We have programs from babies to kids to teens.
Game Boards & Logs can be turned in as they are completed through Wednesday, July 31th, 2024.
Game Boards & Reading Logs are available at the library.
(See examples & prizes that will be part of the Prize Drawings on August 2nd, at the bottom of this page.)
Game Board
Children: Birth - going into 1st Grade
- Mark your reading progress on the Game Board.
- For every book you read color in a circle on the Game Board!
- Bring the completed Game Board to the library.
- Free Summer Reading T-Shirt from the Mt. Vernon Hills Bank for the first completed Game Board (while supplies last)
- One Free Book or small prize for each additional completed Game Board submitted.
- Cut out the Completion Slip to be entered to win a grand prize.
- Complete more than one Game Board for more chances to win!
- Slips must be turned in by July 31, 2024.
- Names will be drawn for prizes at the Ice Cream Social on Friday, August 2, 2024. You do not have to be present to win.
Reading | Activity Logs
Children: going into 2nd Grade - 6th Grade
- When you read (or listen to a audiobook) for 15 minutes mark your reading progress with a "R" on the Reading Log.
- This reading log can be adapted to count as books read for varying reading abilities. Just check the box on the form.
- If you complete one of the listed activities mark the log with an "A".
- Bring the completed Reading|Activity Log to the library.
- Free Summer Reading T-Shirt from the Mt. Vernon Hills Bank for the first completed Game Board (while supplies last)
- Pick a small prize for each additional completed Reading|Activity Log submitted.

Family Programs
Family Programs that are intended for school age children (those going into 2nd - 6th) who can listen quietly & participate respectfully with the presenter. We invite all to attend, however we ask if your child is not sitting and listening quietly to please temporarily step out of the space, with your child, so others may continue to enjoy the program.
Children 6 and under need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Children's Programs with Miss Sarah
We will have a few programs featuring Miss Sarah over the summer.
These programs are ideal for 3 years old through kids entering 6th grade.
A parent or guardian needs to be present with children 6 years old and younger during the entire program.

HOW IT WORKS
- Featured Readers For: Ages 3 years old to going into 6th Grade.
- Featured Readers must live in Mechanicsville, IA or be a rural patron in Mechanicsville, IA area.
- Enter child's name at the weekly programs and/or as they complete a Game Board / Reading Log. Names will be collected for the duration of this program.
- One Featured Reader will be randomly selected a week. (A child can be Featured Reader only once per summer.)
- The library staff will pick one name a week on either Thursday or Friday. (June 6th - July 26th)
Names drawn will get a sign in their yard for approximately 5-7 Days (1 week)

YARD SIGNS WILL BE PASSED FROM ONE READER TO ANOTHER.

PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THE YARD SIGNS.

IDEALLY, YARD SIGNS WILL BE PICKED UP (RETURNED) & HANDED OUT ON FRIDAYS AT THE LIBRARY.
(*Rural patrons need to be able to pick-up and return signs on Fridays)
Parent/Guardian will be sent an email with a link to fill out FEATURED READER ONLINE FORM. Parent/Guardian will take a digital photo at the Feature Reader’s home (or a public area) and email it to mdehmer@mechanicsville.lib.ia.us.
The picture and short blurb about Featured Reader will be share on social media.
Requires signed permission from parent guardian to participate. This is included in the FEATURED READER ONLINE FORM.
